Bone Density Scan (DEXA)

A bone density scan (also known as a DEXA or DXA scan) is a safe and painless test that measures the strength and density of your bones. It helps to identify if your bones are becoming thinner or weaker, which may put you at risk of osteoporosis or fractures.

During the scan, a small amount of low-dose X-ray is used to measure the amount of calcium and minerals in your bones. The results are presented as a T-score and Z-score, which compare your bone strength to healthy young adults and to others of your own age and sex.

A bone density scan is one of the most effective ways to detect osteoporosis early and reduce the risk of serious fractures later in life.
