What is a Pessary?

A pessary is a silicone device that fits into the vagina to help support a pelvic organ prolapse. A pelvic organ prolapse is defined as the symptomatic dropping of one or more of the pelvic organs (bladder, womb, rectum). They can give symptoms of heaviness, vaginal bulge, perineal pressure, lower back/pelvic pain and can cause difficulty in emptying the bladder or bowel. Problems such as repeated force like a chronic cough or constant straining due to constipation can gradually worsen this laxity over years (not just one or two bouts of coughing or constipation, but continuous difficulty in going to the toilet).
Alongside pelvic floor exercises, weight loss and other lifestyle adaptations, a pessary can be very effective in alleviating the symptoms of a pelvic organ prolapse. They can be worn all the time, or used just when symptomatic, such as when exercising. Our pessary specialist, Emma, will discuss your personal needs and match you with the right pessary management programme.

New health supplement now available to order!

ProMagD is a brand-new supplement now available to order. It has been developed by Hazel Hayden of the Bristol Menopause & Wellwoman Clinic.
Hazel has over 15 years’ experience of working in women’s health. She regularly recommends supplements that can support women - especially during the menopause.
Hazel was often recommending supplements to women in her private clinic to relieve menopausal symptoms - probiotic, magnesium, vitamin D and B12, which were all taken separately. Consequently, she realised that instead of recommending women buy multiple separate supplements, she could pull them into one single supplement - hence ProMagD was developed.
ProMagD is a safe, effective multivitamin that can be used by all women (over the age of 18) whether they take HRT or not. It is also safe enough to be taken by women who have had breast cancer.
It contains the highest quality ingredients. The capsule is organic and vegan. As it is in capsule form, there are also no added bulking agents, meaning the purest, highest quality ingredients are at their most effective.
A single capsule of ProMagD provides the daily recommended amount, so no need to worry that the dosages are too high. They also won’t interact with other medications, such as HRT or other prescribed medicines.
Buying supplements separately can become very expensive, so at prices starting from just £20 a month, ProMagD is therefore good for both you and your purse!
Finally, you can be assured that by bringing these four ingredients together, there has been no loss in the quality or efficacy of the supplement as there are no additives used in its formulation.

So, what’s inside ProMagD?

Probiotics are live bacteria and yeast that help to keep the gut healthy by nourishing and supporting naturally occurring micro-organisms in the colon. It is recommended that we should eat 52 different varieties of food each week, but this can be increasingly difficult in our busy lives.
There is a connection between gut and mind health which, for women going the through the menopause, is vitally important. Maintaining a healthy gut can lead to maintaining a healthy and positive mind. The probiotics used in ProMagD can help in maintaining vaginal health. Therefore, the Probiotics added to ProMagD are specific to women at the menopausal stage of their lives.
The Magnesium within ProMagD is used in its purest form, and can help improve sleep, protect the bones and lower the risk of depression or anxiety.
It also supports the heart by reducing inflammation in the body.
Vitamin D
Vitamin D is known as the sunshine vitamin, as it is absorbed during the summer and should maintain its beneficial levels through winter. However, in the UK this is not the case and Vitamin D is often recommended for year-round supplementation.
Vitamin D protects bones in the long term and can also help prevent aches and pains through the menopause. There is growing evidence that it can help the immune system, so is important during the Coronavirus pandemic.
Vitamin B12
Research has found that many women over the age of 50 lack vitamin B12 which leads to fatigue. During the menopause, using vitamin B12 can help women maintain their energy levels.
Vitamin B12 can prevent cognitive decline as well as protecting bones, which along with depletion in oestrogen, can lead to osteoporosis. Vitamin B12 is difficult to obtain through dietary intake alone.
ProMagD contains the recommended daily dose of vitamin B12.
